A new study from Manhattan Research has revealed that 26% of doctors in Europe own an iPad, and spend more than 25% of their professional time using the tablet.

1,207 doctors from Italy, Germany, France, Spain and the UK participated in the ‘Taking the Pulse Europe‘ study, and the results were first picked up by medical blog PMLiVE.

As expected, the iPad was most often used for internet access (27%), with most physicians utilizing Apple’s tablet to look up information online, or for offering some more advice and information to their parents. In fact, Manhattan Research found that internet usage on the iPad was more common that doctor’s internet access on cell and smartphones (18%), but still considerably less than their web access on desktops and laptops (55%).

“We discovered that iPad-owning physicians spend an impressive 27 percent of their professional online time on the device, likely replacing desktop time and probably some offline media time too,” said Christina Anthogalidis, principal analyst at Manhattan Research. “Use of these devices at the point-of-care to educate patients and manage records is also promising at this stage.”

The survey was carried out in the fourth quarter of 2011 and revealed the iPad ownership by country, with British, French and German doctors seemingly more willing to experiment with Apple’s tablet for work purposes. Manhattan Research’s study also revealed that a not inconsiderable 40% of doctors will look to buy an iPad over the course of the next six months.
